Levy, Uriah
(1792-1862)
   American naval officer. Born in Philadelphia, he served as a cabin boy at an early age. He purchased a share in a schooner, and in 1811 became the first Jewish sea captain. During the war of 1812 he volunteered for service but was captured by the British. He became the first Jewish officer in the US Navy in 1817. In 1860 he became a commodore of the Mediterranean fleet.
